KazTeleRadio JSC, national operator of TV/radio broadcasting has performed the works on disconnecting the conditional access system (CAS) from the free access channels, which system had been previously introduced for the purpose of encrypting the digital on-air TV signal.
This decision opens up Kazakhstan’s market to all types of receivers of the relevant standard and, accordingly, allows lowering their price. Naturally, the reduced price for receivers will make watching domestic TV channels a more affordable service. Moreover, there is no need now to contact the Call Center to activate your receiver, which considerably simplifies the procedure for connecting to the digital on-air network.
Previously, CAS was implemented for usage for technical, recording and service purposes. In addition, recording of users of digital on-air TV ensured targeted support to socially-vulnerable segments of the population, enabled controlling the quality of signal, and addressing the problems with trans-border broadcasting. However, the cost of receivers and easiness of connection to the network are the more important factors now.
Note that the digital on-air TV was launched in 5 cities in Kazakhstan in July 2012. In 2013, as part of the second phase in implementation, such TV was started in all regions’ centers and everywhere in Mangistau region.
To date, KazTeleRadio JSC has put into operation 336 radio/RV stations, which resulted in 72% coverage of population with digital on-air TV, or 11.5 million persons. The analogue network is represented by 1220 radio/RV stations. By the latest estimates, the number of subscribers to “OTAU TV” satellite television owned by , KazTeleRadio JSC is over 1 million , and to digital on-air TV – over 200 thousand.
